Gum Recontouring Hampton
Bring Better Balance to Your Smile
Only a few millimeters of gum tissue should be visible when you smile. If more than that is revealed, you have what is known as a “gummy smile.” While this is not a serious oral health issue, it can affect your confidence — and our Hampton cosmetic dentistry team wants to help! We may recommend a minimally invasive surgical procedure known as gum recontouring to enhance the balance of your smile and help you feel great about what you see in the mirror. What Is Gum Recontouring?

Gum recontouring goes by a few different names, including gum contouring, gingivoplasty, and crown lengthening. (Technically, crown lengthening is a different procedure, so if you see any information that equates it to gum recontouring, ask questions so you know exactly what treatment you are getting!)
During the gum recontouring procedure, Dr. Ravi uses a WaterLase soft tissue laser to carefully remove excess or uneven gum tissue. This reveals more of the underlying dentition and causes the teeth to appear larger. In turn, this can create a more balanced and proportionate appearance for the entire smile. Gum recontouring can be performed on just one tooth, a whole tooth, or the entire gumline.
How Does Gum Recontouring Work?

We start the process by thoroughly numbing your mouth; we do not want you to experience discomfort during your procedure! If you are particularly nervous or sensitive, we may recommend sedation as well. After you are settled in, Dr. Ravi will perform the procedure, taking great care to remove only as much tissue as necessary to achieve your aesthetic goals.
The laser cauterizes tissues, so you can expect very little bleeding. The process usually takes just one appointment, and recovery time is relatively short compared to procedures performed with traditional scalpels. Our team will review post-op instructions with you so you can enjoy a smooth recovery.
The Benefits of Gum Recontouring

Gum recontouring offers some impressive benefits:
- More balanced smile: Removing extra gum tissue can help your teeth and gums look more proportional. This may increase your confidence and help you feel better in social settings.
- Improved symmetry: Carefully reshaping uneven tissue can create a smoother, more consistent gumline.
- Fast treatment: In many cases, the procedure can be completed in just one comfortable visit.
- Minimal bleeding: Our WaterLase laser gently cauterizes tissue, which helps recovery feel easier.
- Long-lasting confidence: Once excess tissue is removed, you can enjoy results every time you smile. In fact, the treated tissue is highly unlikely to ever grow back.
- Open the way for additional treatments: With more of your teeth exposed, you may become a better candidate for veneers and other cosmetic services.
- Better oral health: Gum recontouring may reduce oral irritation and lower the risk of infections and inflammation.
